In 2024 Tribeca Festival will offer the world premieres of a Brat Pack documentary, a film starring Lily Gladstone and films following the lives of music figures Linda Perry and Avicii, organizers said Wednesday as they announced the event’s lineup.
Also on the schedule will be a film starring Jenna Ortega, a buddy comedy starring Michael Cera, Maya Erskine and Kristen Stewart, and a documentary examining the world of queer stand-up comedy.
This year’s festival, which will run in Lower Manhattan from June 5-16, will open with the documentary “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge” and will feature 103 films from 114 filmmakers in 48 countries. The festival will offer 86 world premieres and 30 films directed by first-time filmmakers.
Officials said their final picks were chosen from more than 13,000 submissions — a record.
“We feel really fortunate that there was such enthusiasm, especially with all the challenges the industry has had this year,” Cara Cusumano, director of the Tribeca Festival, said in a telephone interview. “It made me feel really optimistic about the future of independent film and the resilience of the creative community.”
The documentary ‘Brats’ will follow Andrew McCarthy as he crosses the country reuniting with fellow actors Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez and others who in the 1980s and ’90s collectively became known as the Brat Pack. The premiere will be followed by a panel with McCarthy, who directed the documentary, and other cast members.
Coming off a strong awards season, Gladstone teams up once again with writer-director Morrisa Maltz on “Jazzy,” a sequel to the 2023 drama “The Unknown Country.” Gladstone won a Gotham Award for her performance in that series before she began picking up awards for her work on “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
The documentary ‘Avicii — I’m Tim’ will follow the prodigious electronic dance music producer through his own words. (She died in 2018 at age 28.) And festival organizers said pop star-turned-songwriter Linda Perry will perform after the debut of “Linda Perry: Let It Die Here.”
Ortega stars in a teenage love story titled “Winter Spring Summer or Fall,” while Cera, Erskine and Stewart get involved in an impromptu road trip to “Sacramento.”
“Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution” stars Lily Tomlin, Wanda Sykes, Rosie O’Donnell, Hannah Gadsby and Joel Kim Booster. Before the film, the film’s stars will perform a standup performance, organizers say.
Cusumano also highlighted what she called a “female-forward” lineup of musical acts, including Perry, Renée Elise Goldsberry (of “Hamilton” and “Girls5eva” fame) and DJ and singer Sister Nancy.
And Cusumano noted that several films will tackle current issues such as global conflict, the 2024 presidential election and artificial intelligence.
“We were very careful about our placement on the calendar this close to the election,” he said, pointing to the inclusion of films about affirmative action, disinformation and extremism.
“Furthermore, we also want to make sure the festival has a sense of calm and entertainment, so there’s plenty of comedy,” he added. “People are having a good time.”
